4th Week Reflection

16 Oct

This week was a different week compare with the previous three weeks. In this week, all of my classmates in Section B did our Teaching Experience (TE). The purpose of this TE is different with the purpose of TE in the previous 4 semester. In this TE, we should be able to conduct our own Classroom Action Research (CAR). We have two weeks of TE with 4 possible times to teach and conduct our CAR. I feel so curious about this TE. Finally, I got my school for TE, SMA SB (edited). My partners in SMA SB are Ratih, Triana and Novani.

We started our TE on Monday, October 10th 2011. Then, we met our own master teacher (guru pamong). My master teacher is a 58-years-old mathematics teacher, Bapak J (censored). At first, he doubted my ability to teach in his class. He teaches in XI and XII Science. He asked me, “how come you teach students in XI Science, with so many formulas in Trigonometry, without only memorizing but understanding the concept of each formula?”. I was shocked and did not know what to say. I only said, “yes, I’m ready Pak with your guiding. :)”.

In the next day, Bapak J asked me and my friends (which are not his students) to observe him. He asked us to see and implement the way of real mathematics teacher teach the students. At first, I assumed that he is a mean teacher. He will scream aloud in the front of the class in order to make his students afraid. But it was only my assumption, because the reality is totally different. He taught his students very clear. His pronunciation, gesture and body language shows his passion in teaching mathematics. He also motivated his students whenever they got stuck with the problems. He always says, “come on, you can solve this problem! Remember our trick in (blablabla)? Use it! Come on, I know you can!”. I also see the great behavior of the students. They really pay attention to the teacher’s explanation, discuss with their friends about the materials and brave to ask the teacher about unclear things on the problem. Whenever they talk with their friends, they keep talking about the materials, not the other topic outside of it. This situation is really amazed me!

On Wednesday, the time for me to teach those students is coming. I’m afraid that they will not like me as much as they like Bapak J. Before entering the classroom, Bapak J asked me to follow his teaching method. He did not want me to pick another teaching method, since the topic is really important for the students in their learning experience. I agree with Bapak J. I do not feel that it is necessary to change the method as long as the students still enjoyed with that. So, I teach my students in XI Science with the same method with Bapak J. At the beginning, I’m afraid with the situation. I thought that they will be passive and do not like my teaching style. Again, it was totally wrong. I found my students really enthusiast with my explanation. They also pay attention to my explanation, discuss with their friends, ask me about unclear things on the problem, and talk about the materials, not the other topic outside of it. This situation is the best situation that I have experienced before.

I also motivate our students by encouraging them. I gave them an appropriate feedback to improve their self-confidence. I try as best as I could to raise their extrinsic motivation. I keep saying that mathematics is important, especially this materials (Trigonometry). I believe that if they can enjoy the learning activity, they can get more from that. 🙂

    Very interesting,Joe..
Wow, 58-years-old..hmm,your master teacher already have experience and knowledge about teaching math, right!
I think that his teaching methods can make students become disciplined and the situation in class is very conducive to learning.. Is there any problems in this class that you might get ?
Congratulations yaa that you get SMA SB.. 🙂

you have such a great master teacher Jo.. i see that he is strict with what he believe about their students and his experience make him ‘comfort’ with his method, i just guess :p
