Twelfth Reflection

In this week, my friends and I have learned about Instructional Variables that could promote students’ motivation in learning there are introductory focus, personalization, involvement, and feedback. Before going to the main part of today’s lesson Ms Lydia ask us to express our feeling by giving short emoticon. Ms Lydia shows us a video about how kindergarten teacher could control their class effectively. That could be happen because teacher did their best to make a rule together with the students and use some movement when saying the rule at the beginning of the class. After that MS Lydia ask us to make a motivation session in group. My group choose topic about “how to be interesting teacher”. I can’t believe that we did motivation session outside the class. The motivator should have an enough self confidence when deliver their material. In my opinion Riyan have did their best to deliver the material, he use some concrete example and making interactive communication with the audience. I also thanks to the audience because they give us some feedback on the spot. After last group perform and get back to the class, I just realized that Ms Lydia didn’t give material yet about Instructional Variables that could promote students’ motivation and I know after did motivation session we have learned about technique for providing Introductory Focus, some technique are using problem or questioning and concrete examples. Thank you for reading. 🙂

Eleventh Reflection

Source: http://wik.ed.uiuc.edu/images/a/ac/Baseball.gif

This week, my friends and I have learned about Climate Variable that could promote students’ motivation in the learning. There are four variables; those are self efficacy, challenge, order and safety, and task comprehension. For the first time, Ms Lydia asks us to draw an ideal classroom from our opinion. Each student draws it then put it on the wall. Then we have gallery walk time, there are some visitors and architects. The architects should explain what is the meaning of their picture to the visitor and maybe getting some opinion from them. My ideal class is about moving class system. I wish have that class when teaching in the real class. After that my group has an opportunity to present a role play about “Success: Developing Learner Self Efficacy”. There are some points that should be highlight in our role play those are teacher should be open the class by open ended question; in the learning process teacher should use variety of high quality examples; provide scaffolding before expecting students to work on their own and detail feedback about learning progress. Another group presents about challenge. It’s interesting for me because teacher should give variety of challenge problem from the easy one to the difficult one. It will promote students’ motivation. They belief they can do it. In the real class, when the students couldn’t answer one question, they will need a help either from the teacher or the other friends. It will be takes time if they should solve by their self. Another condition maybe happen because the friends could answer their question one’s students would be keep trying their best to solve one problem.

Tenth Reflection

Week ten is the first time I couldn’t attend the class just because of my unwell condition. What I have learned with this situation? From my friends’ explanation, I know that there are three causes that could promote students’ motivation in learning those are students’ self-regulation, teacher characteristics and classroom climate variables. This session focused on students’ self regulation.  Singer and Bashir (1999) state in their article that self-regulation is considered a “meta” construct that is specifically defined as “a set of behaviors that are used flexibly to guide, monitor, and direct the success of one’s performance”. When I’m trying to relate it in students’ condition, I believe that students always need motivation, thought process and also strategies to reach their personal goals. That’s why they need a teacher in their class. In the learning process there are two kinds of learning focus those are Mastery Focus and Performance Focus. Mastery focus learning only focus in the learning process (how the students engage in the class) and Performance focus learning only focus in the performance (getting high grade). In my opinion those focuses is supporting each other in the process increasing students’ motivation and this is one of teachers’ job that should balancing that’s part. I should highlight this part because I just realized most of my teacher always use score that I’ll get in motivation time.

I’m Not Stupid

Welcome to the class again :). I would like to say thank you about an opprtunity during teaching experience. Agenda on the sixth meeting are reading, discussion, and watching the movie. What kind of my movie? Yeah, you can see from the picture above that my friend and I watched I’m not stupid. It is movie from Singapore. One of the biggest moviegoer in the Singapore on 2002. If I’m not mistake I’m forget that I already watch this movie, because after the film running around 45 minutes  remember that I have state that I’d like this movie so much :). I’m so inspired by the new teacher of Kok Pin, Terry and Boon Hock Ang that already give the students motivation in the process of reaching their goals.

I just realized that I have watched I’m not stupid after the movie running around 40 minutes. I’m familiar with the class condition and I know what is the next episode of this movie. I’m bad in memorizing (=.=”). This movie so meaningful. I could see that the movie have some message to student, teacher, counselor, parent, and also to the government. I see that teacher have a big influence to make the student interested while learning something. Every children always hope that she/he could pass the course with the good mark. Its related with Mastery goal, usually called as learning goal, its talking about a goal that focus on accomplishing task, improvement, and increasing understanding. When the student didn’t have a goal about she/he could pass the course with the good mark, its make the student getting depression and couldn’t perform maximum in learning. Another side of this movie is talking about parent that always giving higher expectation to the student and compare their children to another children. They always think that their children is excellent when their children could pass the math and English test with the higher score above their friend. It related with performance goals that focus on learners’ ability in comparison to others. I think my reflection enough for this meeting. Beside of my explanation in this paragraph, there are still some case that could be reflect into our daily life. Thank you.

School Experience Part-2

My teaching experience in the second week only going one time. Yeah, in this second week, the school already have an outdoor activity in Purwakarta. Two from ten of my friend follow the activity on there and being an adviser for students. Well, after I’m gonna make reflection of my teaching experience. In the second meeting, my activity little bit same with the previous on, those are students presentation, individual work as post test for my research and another activity is students reflection for my teaching practice on their class. Okay, let’s talk about it one by one. At the end of first meeting, I give my student homework in group. Each group get one exercise, but don’t think it’s a easy exercise. It is not easy because I didn’t explain yet about the little topic, but I assume my students already understood about the previous topic that related to their homework. I really hope that they are discuss it and make it together. Then, in the second meeting I ask them to present their group work result. The presentation begin from group one till group five, so there are two groups that didn’t present their work yet. It because I decided continue to the next activity. The next activity is lecturing. I take a part to make sure my students understanding about this topic, I try to involve them to make a conclusion about the way to get the solution for inequality. After that I give them post test, and I told to them, the result of this post will not affect you final score for your report, so you don’t need to write down your name. But, almost the student on this class collect their paper with big effort that they can do. It’s interesting for me, because I know that the science student would be more interested with the exercise that little bit difficult for them. They said that it’s challenging for me so I should try my best to solve this question. Finally, I know that teacher with big effort to prepare their activity in the class will affect the effort of the students to be struggle learning the topic.

Based on my experience on teaching experience year three, I get something new that might be could be my references for next teaching experience, some of them are listed below:

  1. Observe the class that would be your class, it’s better if you have an opportunity to observe another class, then make the comparison between those two classes.
  2. Make a preparation as good as you can, ask the master teacher about the learning habit of the class. If possible make an exercise different from the book that they use.
  3. If your class is “active student” prepare a lot activity for them, so they won’t busy with their personal business.
  4. Exercise is important! So, make it by using Bloom Taxonomy, give them the exercise from the easy until the complex difficult. If possible give them problem solving.
  5. Trying to remember the name, because your students already have a name. Ask them the nickname that they like to called!
  6. Don’t give the student homework if they are already understood about the topic that you teach, it’s better if you give them homework about reading the next topic.
  7. Always motivated and give them positive reinforcement during the class or feedback for their examination or homework.
  8. Ask them about your teaching and how should you treat them.

Thank you for reading 🙂

School Experience Part-1

Which one that represent your self? For me, I could be both of them. I could be an energetic online teacher or teacher centered because the condition make me to do that. Teacher is decision maker in their class, she/he decide something in every single minute. Don’t be afraid to make wrong decision because I never know that decision is wrong or true if I never try to apply. Welcome to school experience year 3. The name already change, it isn’t school assistant anymore because my friends and I already got one class for every teaching practice. Well, in Senior High School in Kebayoran I called it as L school, I got class with very nice students. Why I called them as nice students? Because the class really in good performance and also achievement as general. I know it from my first observation. The class more quiet than other class and the students in the class really paying attention with the explanation from the teacher. The deplorable thing that I found is the teacher still use teacher centered as his methodology and individual task as his approach. My mind already asking, how about conducting lesson by student centered? When, I see the topic I think I am gonna be crazy if teach them by student centered, because they are not ready yet for it and the material needs more explanation from the teacher. So it will be better if I used teacher centered as my method and group discussion as my approach.

I should make a preparation in this class as good as I can because I know I’ll teach “special” student. FYI, I already teaching in the first week of teaching experience because the school is not effective in the second week. On my teaching time, I’m little bit nervous of course. But I could handle it. In the first meeting I make grand rules with my students and also write down the agenda on that day. They are respect to me as their new teacher in their class. So, it’s easy for me to work with my plan and agenda. Some students looks like didn’t enjoy the class when I ask them to do the exercise, but they are still following the activities with high enthusiasm. Thank you for reading. 😀

Third Reflection

Source: http://motivationalcartoons.files.wordpress.com/2008/11/believeyoucan1.jpg

In the third meeting, I still late for 5 minutes from the time. Fortunately, Mrs Lidya should prepared something so the class wasn’t begin yet. In 5 the third meeting, my friends and I have learned about Belief on Motivation to Learn. First activity is drawing session. Each of us should drawing our future about five or ten years from now. I divide my paper into two part, five years from now, I really want that I could take my master degree not longer than two years, after that I would like to have someone that know me more deeper inside and outside (amin). Ten years from now, I really want make my parent happy by being a teacher in one of school on Denpasar. Hope that my dream come true.

Second activity, we have jigsaw reading. The reading is talking about belief. There are five kinds of belief that might be influence our motivation to learn, those are:

  1. Belief about future outcomes. Students know what should they do to get something in the future, for example I would get A score for the final test if I prepared as well as I can.
  2. Belief about intelligence. Students belief that their ability fixed only on that level because their parent ability, for example I couldn’t do this math assignment because my mom bad in math.
  3. Belief about capability. Students know their ability, what should they do with it to get maximum output in the right time, for example I should solve a lot of exercise when prepared math quiz for next week.
  4. Belief about value. Students know the benefit and disadvantages when they didn’t learn about something, for example I take math education in college level because I choose math teacher as my profession.
  5. Belief about cause of performance.  Students know cause of their performance why they are success or not. Weiner (1992, 2001) said that there are four attributes that make students success or not, those are ability, effort, luck and task difficulty.
My group divide the reading into 4 parts. I got Belief about value and cause of performance, but we only share belief about future outcomes until value. After that someone should share what they have learned from their friend not from what they already master it. By the time, I really enjoy this class. Hope that Mrs Lidya always have different methods for teach us. Thank you for reading 🙂
