We, as a Motivator :)

MMSEL class in the last meeting was very interesting! It was because of the activity. We did motivation session that made by us as a motivator. Each group have different theme of motivation session and for sure it was interesting. 🙂

Before we did the activity, we started the class by showing others about our mood todays. So, we can know what others feeling in the morning when class started. That’s funny, because my friends and I gave different emoticon that showed on their face. It was happy, sad, broken, no feeling, sleepy, etc. But, most of them gave a happy face because we know that the class will be funny and interesting! 🙂

Ok, for the first, Mrs. Lydia explained us about Instructional variables, developing interest in learning activities. Instructional variables are very important to increase students’ motivation in learning. Instructional variables consist of introductory focus, understanding personalization, promoting involvement, and feedback. Introductory focus is a lesson beginning that attracts attention and provides a conceptual framework for the lesson. In this part, we talk about how to get student’s attention in the beginning of the lesson, how to make students interest and want to know more about the lesson. We can use some tools/techniques for this, we can give problems or questions to students that related to the lesson, concrete examples, also give explanation about the objectives.

If we talk about personalization, we concern about what the teacher can do to personalize the lesson to students’ lives. We try to understand what students want and don’t go far away from what the students know and also students environment. That’s we called it understanding personalization, try to understand the students.

Then, involvement talk about the interesting way to make students involved in the activity, so they can actively participating in learning activity. Maybe we can use open ended question for strategy in promoting involvement because open ended questions is important to increase intrinsic interest and students’ motivation. Each student will feel free to share their opinion to others and maybe we can more understand about their ability and what they want to know. For the last, it’s about feedback. We can meet the students need and what they can improve.

After that, we did motivation session and we acted as a motivator. My group and I talk about multiple intelligences. For the motivation session, evik acted as a moderator, huda as presenter, Titiah as Valentino risa and I acted as Agnes Mocere. What a weird name I think. haha  -___-a Ok forget it, we continue. Agnes is a singer, and valentino as a racer. They have their own ability. Maybe they have abilities in Math, English, science, art, writing, and etc. But, they have chosen what they want to improve until they were being a people like now, as a singer and as a racer. As a teacher, maybe we can force the students to do all various intelligences. They can choose what the best one for them, they have different multiple intelligences and they can improve their abilities with their intelligences. And when we talk about motivation, we can support them to reach what they want because their life is in their hand, teacher only act as a motivator for them that always supporting them to be the best one. 🙂

Create a Motivating Classroom :)

As always, MMSEL class in the last meeting was interesting because we did drawing and role play again. We learned about class climate through those activities. First, draw condition of class that represent effective classroom that can increase students motivation in learning process. We design our own classroom that can be effective classroom environment in supporting students’ motivation in learning.

There are one teacher and some students in the picture of my own classroom. Students work in group and make a discussion. So, they can share their opinion to each other. We draw students in group discussion doesn’t mean that the students always work in groups because it can’t be effective. Sometimes they need to work and learn individually, then try to understand about what the teacher explained. So, there is a time to learn individually and also to learn in group. In my picture, teacher was illustrated move from one side to other side. It means that the teacher walk around the class to monitor the students. If teacher found the student who can’t understand well, teacher will help them. The result of group work will be presented and explained by the students in front of the class, so each group can share each other to get other information that is meaningful for them. Then, the product of student’s project will be displayed in the class. It shows appreciation from the teacher to students.

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?q=motivating+classroom&um=1&hl=id&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1024&bih=575&tbm=isch&tbnid=HWXTJXJTTfDw4M:&imgrefurl=http://www.teachersatrisk.com/2008/10/&docid=aJ4ZI_AK4g1iuM&imgurl=http://www.teachersatrisk.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/motivation3.jpg&w=480&h=226&ei=g8PdTsmpJMq4rAeVvtXsCA&zoom=1

I think class condition that I draw can represent about the effective classroom climate that can motivate students in learning. But there are some conditions also from the teacher that can create a motivating classroom. Those are order and safety, success, challenge, and task comprehension. Mrs. Lydia divides us into some groups and each group did role play to represent about one aspect. My group and I did role play about success developing learner efficacy. To develop it, teacher can start the lesson with questioning and give open ended question, use variety of high quality examples, develop lessons questioning, and also give feedback to students. So they can increase their performance in learning better.

From other groups, I also learned about order and safety, challenge, and task comprehension. I will explain more about challenge in this reflection. I learned this from group 2. About challenge, teacher increase students’ perception about their ability. Students have to know their own ability and what they can improve, but still have a confidence that they can do their best in doing work. If teacher find the student who can’t do their work, teacher can ask them to discuss with their friends so students can know about other perception how to solve the problem. After they finished their work, they can take other problem, higher problem that can increase their competence. In this case, teacher encourages students and gives challenge to the students.

We learned a lot from this activity, how to design an effective classroom climate and how to create a motivating classroom. Hopefully I can be a teacher who can make positive classroom climate, a motivating classroom that can support students’ learning. 🙂

Class Situation, Learner, and Teacher

Last week of MMSEL course, we have a lot of discussion in group. The topic for the day is about 3 things that can affect someone to learn, that are class structure, teacher, and also learner. Before we started the activity, we have brain gym to make us more relax and ready to do the activity. After that, we did group discussion. Mrs. Lydia divided us into some groups.

My group and I discussed about the teacher. We consider for a moment about motivating teacher that helped us as a learner to genuinely want to learn who was able to influence us to go beyond another course finished, another credit earned. We imagined that teacher and remember what learning was like in that classroom. For me, it was in junior high school. When I was in Junior high school, I join science club. This class is prepared for Olympiad. This club is guided by the teacher that can motivate me when I learnt about Mathematics. He showed me many application in Mathematics, how to learn with the real object, for example learn Math using “Hanoi Tower”. I learned about pattern of sequence and how to get the sequence by using that real object. That’s very interesting. My teacher always supports me when I felt that I can’t solve the problem, when I stacked on one problem. He was a teacher who was motivated me and my friends. In this club, we have the same purpose and we struggle together to get that we want. This club is like special class after or before the formal class. We solve higher level problem and my teacher show me the way how to solve it with interesting way. I think the teacher like that can motivate us in better learning and can increase student’ self expectation.

For the class structure, there are some affects that can improve student’s motivation. That are about classmates who care, helpful, cooperative, kind, active, responsible, open minded and respect. That can make us comfortable in learning process. Beside of that, the class condition (Clean, temperature, facilitation, size) is important. Motivation and interest from learner itself is also affects someone to learn that can help students in developing their self confidence in learning process.

Then, we discussed about teacher characteristics deeply. It’s about mastery focused and performance. In mastery focused, we talk about the material. We focus on the process, not result; teacher can give project or task based on students’ interest but still challenges. About the performance, teacher can make every students feel like somebody. Students can see the performance and reflect each other to make a better learning. I hope for the future, I can be a teacher that can motivate my students in learning.

I am not Stupid too!

The last meeting of MMSEL class was so interesting. We just watched a movie with title “I not Stupid”. That movie is so interesting and very inspiring me as a teacher candidate.  This movie tell about three students who are all in low level class, the hopeless bunch in the “perfect” education system, where the smart ones gets the recognition of being smart and the weak ones are branded unfairly as stupid, useless and of no use to the society which favor prioritizes degrees, science and math.

One of Students is under pressure of his mother who pressures him to get 90 points in his exams, but he will never be able to do it. It was not because he doesn’t want to study, but it because of Math and Science is not his expert. As we know that he is good in painting, but his mother still force him to get good mark in math test. In that situation, I think this student can’t develop his ability to draw. Forced by his mother also can decrease his self-esteem, he’ll think that he is stupid and useless, but actually he is not. But I like a moment when there is one teacher who come and always support him in whatever situation. This teacher like his painting and doesn’t force him to get good mark in math lesson because she know that he is good in painting.

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?imgurl=http://jiffest.org/2004/photos/I-Not-Stupid_thumb.jpg&imgrefurl=http://jiffest.org/2004/synopsis.cfm%3Ftitle%3DI%2520Not%2520Stupid&usg=__fVJKdoFrHjyKtUQiWnOTJcM5dOw=&h=125&w=200&sz=15&hl=id&start=12&sig2=5MVFzC0pVa8aCxrlFIcZww&zoom=1&tbnid=Oy-EPg5GWs3qmM:&tbnh=65&tbnw=104&ei=aXivToveFYmIrAfq9KVJ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Di%2Bnot%2Bstupid%2Bsynopsis%26um%3D1%26hl%3Did%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D677%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1

Another life from one student named terry who is rich, but does not even know how to make coffee and is often too scared to stand up for his much braver friends as his mother taught him “It’s none of you businessssssss”. You know that one thing that terry didn’t have is freedom. He never can decide one best thing for his life because he always listen and do whatever his mother saying. Based on Maslow theory, everyone need physiological, safety, and loves to make them feel comfort with the environment. But from this point of view, what Terry get for their life? He just has material that he needed, safety from his parents (not environment), how about loves and freedom? He can’t do anything that he wants to do and he doesn’t ever know how about the environment. So, parent’s love and care is not about the material, but also give freedom and let the children know the environment deeper.

Then, one other student who should taking care one stale of his mother, taking care of his younger brother while his mom works, doing a lot of homework even though he is hopeless to do it.  But, he motivated after being inspired by a new math teacher who actually cared about her students, studied hard to better himself, because he knew he could.

So, from this movie I learnt many things that students need person who can motivate them to reach their dream. There is no stupid student, but there are students who doesn’t have teacher who can understand and motivate them. Very inspiring movie 🙂

What are my teaching reflection?

In second week of my teaching experience, i have taught students in class X-1 and also conducted action research for reflection to improve my teaching. As i said before on the first reflection of my teaching experience, i used TGT (Team Games Tournament) for my method of action research. This method make the students feel enjoy the class because they can work in group to solve the problems. Each group compete each other to collect the point, we called it as tournament. But there is one question in my mind, the students are really understood about the lesson or not.

Before I started TGT (Team Games Tournament), I have explained the topic about how to find the root of quadratic equation to the students. I hope they can really understand what I explained to them. To check their understanding, I gave them some exercises in group and let them to discuss it. I asked the students to make sure that all of group members should to understand how to solve the problem of quadratic equation. They said that they were feeling happy and enjoy the class. But, when TGT started, some of them can’t understand well about quadratic equation, we call it slow learner and how can they solve the problem if they don’t really understand about it? This is reflection for me, the method that I used can motivate them to learn but this method didn’t work for some students, they can’t really understand about the material deeply. Some students are fast learner and some students are slow learner. Although we used TGT as group work, actually some of them still work individually.

Other reflection for me is about handout for students. My master teacher usually gives them handout that contains of material and step-step to solve the problem. In my first teaching, I gave them handout about quadratic equation, problem, and also steps to solve the problem. But in my next teaching, I didn’t give handout to my students. And do you know what happened when I didn’t give them handout? They were confused how to solve the problem and what the steps that should be taken by them. They were not really learn the material from the explanation from the teacher. When I gave them exercises, the students always ask me the way or the steps how to solve it. If they have got it, then they did it. I think giving handout to the students is not good enough and not effective. Actually, the purpose is to make the students understand the material systematically and clearly. But it can make the students being dependent and they can’t brainstorm it by themselves. That’s my reflection. Hopefully i can do better in the next teaching. 🙂

I Love All of My Students!

In this semester, I did teaching Experience in one school at Menteng . This is my first time to teach alone in the classroom and also do actions research in this school. I taught first grade for topic Quadratic equation. Before I teach the students in class X-1, I observed my master teacher when he taught the students in class XI-social about statistic. My master teacher is more teacher centered learning. He just explained and gave examples about statistical data. Some students were not looked enthusiastic in learning and not all students were being active in the class.

I want to give something different with my master teacher. I want to teach my students in class X-1 with cooperative learning by using TGT (Team Games Tournament). The method that I used is not fully TGT (Team Games Tournament), but just let the students work in group to increase their understanding , make sure that all of them understand about the topic and then give them individual test. The result of individual test will be depends on individual score and also mean of group score. So, each student in each group should be understood about the topic that we have learned. Individual test will be on different level. Each student in one group will get 1 problem that suitable with his/her understanding. But first of all, I have divided them into some group and each group consists of students that have different level of understanding (Based on the result of their mid-term test).

Why I use TGT (Tea Games Tournament)? It was because of used cooperative learning by group work for the first meeting in class X-1 is not effective enough. There are some students who still work individually even though in their group. Beside of that, students with low level of understanding were not actively participating in group work.  When I ask some students to solve the problem, there are some students who were not really understand how to solve it. So, I used TGT (Team Games Tournament) to increase their motivation in learning math and also improve their understanding that can improve their achievement.

In other that, I learnt other thing. There is one of my students who a special student. He is gifted student. He is clever student, but for Mathematics only. My master teacher said that my special student is actually an autism student; he is the best in mathematics. One of my reason using TGT is because of him too. He has high level of understanding in math. 🙂

In other class, in class XI-Social, I met a special student too; she said that she is a half-autism. She has a very obsessive behavior with one thing that is about computer. She loves all about thing that related to technology. But, in learning other thing, she can’t concentrate if she is not sit down at front row.

From this experience, I get the point that my student in my class (he) and also student in social class are need more attention, care and motivation from us to feel that they feels. Last but not least, I just want to say actually my students has different characteristic and behavior, but I love all of them however they are! 🙂

I have so many dreams! :)

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?q=my+dream&um=1&hl=id&client=firefox-a&hs=MQv&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1024&bih=575&tbm=isch&tbnid=L0eNy99SlXnppM:&imgrefurl=http://madeayuchance.blogspot.com/2011/01/because-this-is-my-dream-mine.html&docid=TuSIZyMEz4ErBM&w=520&h=364&ei=peaSTpb2JcPOrQf0ku2bAQ&zoom=1 In third meeting, I got some motivation from drawing session. We have to draw who I am in the future, five until ten years from now.  I wanna be an elementary teacher. Why? Because I like children. Not only because of that, but actually I wanna be a teacher that can motivate my students in learning Math. As we know that teaching elementary students is not easy. Sometimes, they need more motivation than junior or senior high school students. I will make Mathematics to be a fun thing for them so that they can increase their motivation in learning Mathematics. And actually, i have been teaching elementary students in one school since 2 months ago even though just once a week.

That’s my dream. But, before I am being an elementary teacher, of course i want to graduate for my master degree (I hope in foreign country :p).

The thing that I have to remember is about the way to make my parents and also my family live happily. I can’t forget the way they teach me from i am child until now. They give their care and all they have to me. That’s something that can’t be judged by anything. It is the most valuable. Hopefully i can reach my dream even though it’s not easy to get J

After that, we have jigsaw reading. My group and I became an expert group of believe about value. There are three types of values that influence learner motivation, that are attainment value, utility value and cost.

  1. Attainment value refers to the importance an individual attaches to doing well on a task. For example, a person believes that she/he is good in Mathematics
  2. Utility value refers to the topic, activity or course of study that useful for meeting future goals, including career goals. For example, a person learns calculus because he/she feels that calculus is important for her/his future.
  3. Cost is about consideration of what an individual must give up to engage in the task. For example the person feels that he/she can’t do calculus assignment, feels like impossible thing, so the person is not motivated to do it.

Beside of that, I learn about beliefs about future outcomes, beliefs about intelligence and beliefs about capability from my original group. I think utility value almost same with beliefs about future outcomes, because the important thing is person’s future. There are expectations, time and also value. Attainment value is like beliefs about intelligence, but there are 2 types for beliefs of intelligence. That are entity view, intelligence is essentially fixed and stable over time, and incremental view, intelligence is not stable and can be increased with effort. A person can do something because of his/her effort. Beliefs about capability is about self efficacy, more specific than self concept.

I think activity above is effective for the class motivation because various methods can be increase our motivation in learning. We think that learning about motivation is important for our future as teacher, we call it needs for future outcomes. 🙂

Let’s we reflect! :)

This is second meeting of MMSEL (Motivation and Management of Students for Effective Learning course. Ok, now I will reflect what is happening on the second meeting. Before we started the class, we did game about remembering friends’ breakfast. Let’s guess whether I still remember about my friend’s breakfast? Hmm, Ms. Lydia ate cheesecake, mba Desy and Evik were not breakfast, Ayu ate ketupat sayur, some of us ate Bakwan, Jo ate singkong, Huda ate jo’s breakfast, ratih ate nasi uduk, Bubur ayam for Mita (not yet) haha, Eki cheetos. Others? Ah sorry I forgot their breakfast *:p*What a funny game I think. The way to remember students name is unique, use a simple game.

After that, we presented our group work like a gallery work. This gallery work was about theory of Motivation. All group’s work were put on the wall, some students stay on each group work and some students stray. We learn 5 different kinds theory of Motivation, behavior theory, cognitive theory, sociocultural, social cognitive, and humanistic theory. Sometimes, I can’t differentiate between social cognitive theory and sociocultural theory.

After go to gallery work, I get some points of social cognitive theory. That are learning theory based on the ideas that people learn by watching what others do and that human thought processes are central to understanding personality. There are personal qualities, behavior and environment for the achievement motivation of social cognitive theory. And for Sociocultural theory, there is an important concept in sociocultural theory is known as the zone of proximal development. According to Vygotsky, the zone of proximal development “is the distance between the actual development level as determined by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determined through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers.” Essentially, it includes all of the knowledge and skills that a person cannot yet understand or perform on their own yet, but is capable of learning with guidance. So, main point of this theory is about learning with Guidance from environment to improve potential development of the students. Can you share with me about differences of sociocultural and social cognitive theory of motivation? So, I can understand more about that. 🙂

After that, we learn about Humanistic theory. There are 5 level hierarchies of needs by Abraham Maslow, physiological, safety, belongingness and love, esteem, and self actualization. The level depends on the needs of human. The basic is physiological and the highest is self actualization, the need to develop potential talents and capabilities.

Then, we learn about the need for self Determination through role play from different groups. There are 4 needs, the need for competence, autonomy, relatedness, and preserve self worth. Each group did role play that present different kinds of need for self determination. My group presented about the need for self worth. It’s about an emotional reaction to or an evaluation of the self. Do you still remember words “I’m a genius! I’m a genius!” Yes, that is one of emotional reaction. All of us can learn each other from the role play and I think this activity is effective enough to learn about new material. That’s funny, effective and also interesting right? So we can get the main concept by learning from others. 🙂

Motivation to be a Teacher!

It was my first time to join the Motivation class with Ms. Lydia. Yes, Ms. Lydia is the lecturer for Motivation and Management of Students for Effective Learning (MMSEL) course. When I entered the class, I was curious what we will learn about motivation? Something like Educational Psychology course or what? I want to know more about that. And actually on the beginning, Ms. Lydia leads us to think what make us come and join her class. Of course I want to know more about Motivation. As we know that motivation is so abstract and difficult for me to build my motivation by myself. That’s we called intrinsic motivation, involvement as a means to an end. But, we also need other people to build our motivation and we call it extrinsic motivation.

I’m interest with the question from Ms. Lydia about why do you want to be a teacher? Do you know my reason? Nothing reason in my mind! Actually before I entered SSE, I don’t really want to be a teacher even though I love teaching. It’s just because I don’t like to stand in front of many people and to be on the spot light.

After I did school experience in some schools and learn about pedagogical skill in SSE, I can know that to be a teacher was interesting and so fun! We meet many students that have different characteristics of learning. I am not only teaching the students, but I can learn many things from them. Being a teacher make me feel “useful” for others. And I admit that I love teaching and I love being a teacher! 🙂

If I have to choose teachers whom I admire most, I will choose one teacher from movie “Taree Zameen Par”. The teacher in this movie shows the best care to one student that has dyslexia. That student study in general school, not special school. So, that student feels difficult to understand the lesson. Luckily, the teacher really shows care, always try to teach and motivate him until he gets his expertise in drawing lessons. What a great teacher I think. The personality of the teacher like that can motivate me to be a great teacher.

After sharing moment, we discuss about theory of Motivation in group. There are 4 theorist of Motivation, that are Behavioral, Humanistic, Sociocultural, Cognitive and Social cognitive.  My group get Sociocultural theory. This theory say about “all in this together”, how history and society impact the way of humans develop and learn. From this theory, we can apply how the students increase their motivation from the society, especially motivation and support from their family, school, and environment. So, build the motivation of students is so important for learning process and I conclude that MMSEL course is important for me as candidate teacher. Do you know why? Because the students have different motivation in learning and in this course, I can learn how to build up motivation of the students. Thank you for great first meeting, ms. Lydia.  🙂
