Reflection week 12

As usual MMSEL course is very exciting for me. At the first time, Ms Lydia asked us to make a big of circle. Then, we had to express our feeling, it was a funny activity, because i saw how my friends expressed their feeling in many ways. 🙂

Last week, Ms Lydia explains about instructional variables which are promoting students motivation in the class. There are four parts of instructional variables, The variables are introductory focus, personalization, involvement and feedback. Introductory focus is about lesson beginning, how the teacher attract students attention and image of the lesson. Teacher should make an interesting part but meaningful on the beginning of the lesson, it can influence of students motivation to learn also get response and good initial assessment of students. Personalization is about how the teacher make connection between students lives and material given. It can help student to understand more about the material, and it can motivate students to learn. The teacher can use real life example to link the material and students lives, because its familiar of students lives. involvement is about how the teacher involve students in learning process. the teacher can involve students in groups, games or activities in the class. And for feedback is about how the teacher giving feedback that can increase intrinsic and self efficacy of students.

After Ms Lydia explains about that, she showed us video. the video is about how the teacher giving instruction and handle the classroom. the video was inspiring for me, because i saw even teacher and students are enjoy in the class. the teacher use variety activities to make students understand the material. Then, we did discussion in pair about the video.

After discussion, we did role play. Ms.Lydia asked us to join with our group. my group are Ipin, Ismi, ayu and I. The theme of our role play is doubt become a teacher. we tried to motivated the audience for not doubt become a teacher. and the motivator of my group is Ipin, he did great job for that. 🙂

My Reflection 11th week

                Today, we learnt about positive classroom climate. First activity, we started by drawing about what looked like a positive classroom climate. I drew a situation that consists of teacher and students who discuss about the material. Teacher and students help each other, students discussed in group. They mutualy encourage to achieve in understanding the material. if there is any problem when students do exercise or task, they can ask to teacher. I drew about it in my paper, student who was asked to teacher and the situation is serius but fun.

In a positive classroom climate, not only students who try to achieve the goal of learning but also teacher has the goal in learning. Actually, teacher learn more when she/he teachs and delivers the material for students. Students and teacher work together to reach the goal. The goal in creating positive classroom climate is order and safety, sucsess, challenge and task comprehension.

Then, we got the piece of paper which had a series of words and the same color. My color was orange and the series of words forming word “Challenge”. My groups consists of Ismi, Desy, and Ayu. We discussed and made a role play about challenge.  In my group, Desy as a teacher, and the other as students. Teacher provide a challenging learning in class with a challenging task  for students. It can increase perception of their self-efficacy and competence when students succeed on task as challenging. The task has relevant and meaning for students.

Mita’s group shown a role play about success. They explained that success can develop self-efficacy of students. Teacher give a variety of examples and task that has relevant to students life. If students feel difficult in doing the exercise, teacher divide students by scaffolding. Teacher start the lesson with open-ended question and give feedback about their learning progress. If students get a mistake, teacher do not judge of their result/work but teacher tells which one is wrong. Teacher also gives motivation that they can to do the exercise. Mistake is a part of learning process, did not mean that they aren’t success. So, I think that we should not be afraid to try something and then make a mistake, because with the existence of a mistake means that we learn.

What make us motivated in learning in the class?

That was actually I have learnt in the tenth meeting of MMSEL. I just knew precisely about the factor what made students motivated in learning in the class. There were about class structure, self regulation, and teacher characteristics. I and my friends analyze those factors through discussion (pairs and share) and gallery walk (1 stay 2 stray). In the small group, we share about our experience when we were studying in the primary or secondary school. We share about what condition of class which make us enthusiast in learning, what kind of teacher who can motivated us in learning, and as a learner  how do  we  addressing the phenomena.  Each of us has different experience. For me, I will enthusiast in learning if the situation of the class is comfortable.  Comfortable means that the environment is clean, tidy, and the member of the class was cooperative. While for my friends, he will more enthusiast if the teacher was really understand what the students’ needs and appreciate for every single students work. When the teacher understand about what students’ need and appreciate for every single students work, he felt that he was involved to the learning process. That’s why as a teacher we should have good communication skill with our students. Because through communication, it will bring us to the self relatedness between students and teacher.

After having discussion about those kinds of factor, we go deeper through literature study.  I and my friends go to the ICT lab to find any resources about class structure. We concern on mastery focused and performance focused. Then we draw a flow chart about class structured on a poster. Through poster, we did gallery walk. In this gallery walk, there were one member stay and two members stray. What content which I still remember from the gallery walk is about mastery focused and performance focused. In mastery focused is depending on the effort of students, because in mastery focused is about learning oriented. While in the performance focused is depending on the student’s ability, because in performance focused is about performance oriented. That’s why as a teacher candidates, I reflect on my self. I should consider to the multiple intelligence. Because every students have different intelligent, because of that we are not allow to just focus on mastery focused or performance focused. We should balance both.
