Week 12: Instructional Variable & Motivation Session

Last week, MMSEL class was very different with previous class. Most of MMSEL class last week spent in an activity, outdoor activity, motivation session. Before that activity begun, Ms. Lidya asked us to show our emotion that day, whether happy, sad, sleepy, or whatever emotion that day without say even a word. We have to use our face to express our feeling. So many expression appears, but mostly is happy, about me of course still sleepy hehehehe. After showing our face expression, we continued to watching video (thanks to Ratih for remind me about this). The video shows teacher who gave instruction to students and the students seems very well prepared for these instructions. In my opinion, it takes times to make students do something like that, and it was amazing.

Next activity learns about Instructional Variables. The instructional variables divided into four parts, introductory focus, personalization, involvement, and feedback. First is introductory focus, it means teacher should be able to create a beginning or opening of a class that attract students’ attention. Besides attract students’ attention, opening activity also should be able to provide a conceptual framework for students. Hence, the expected result is students’ attention gained and they got conceptual knowledge of the material.

Second is personalization, it means that teacher should be able to make connection between the material and students’ live. This is also important for help students to get the main concept of the material. The common example is contextual learning that related the learning material into real life condition.

The main activity in last week is motivation session. We were divided based on article’s posting group to create a motivation session. In my group which consists of Novani, Evik, Titiah, and I choose multiple intelligences as main topic to be delivered. Then, we began to discuss the technical aspects and how we will deliver the material. Based on discussion, Evik was chosen as motivator, Novani as Agnes Mocerai, Titiah as Valentina Rissa, and I as moderator. Then, when our turn comes we begin the role play. The main point of role pay is to convey the teacher candidates/audiences that students are unique; they have different need and different interest in learning. So, as teacher we have to aware and do not force what we want to them.

Instructional Activity

MMSEL course today is started by showing mood. Actually I got miss instruction, because I don’t know the instruction. I think we should show mood based on PPT from Ibu Lydia, but we should show our own mood in that time. So, I just smileJ. It means I feel ashamed. After that we talk about interest, how to design classroom that fulfill student interest. That will be hard, but teacher should do it to make student interest to learn. Even student have different interest, teacher able to generalize it and apply in the class.

We can make an interesting activity in the class based on our instructional variable. The variable is introductory focus, personalization, involvement, and feedback. Introductory focus is attracting students’ attention; it can be apply by using Varity method that interesting for student. Then personalization is link to students’ lives, it mean teacher able to know every student personality and emotion, so teacher should try to fulfill it when teaching material. After that Involvement, involvement is increasing intrinsic interest. It can be apply by using open-ended questions and using hand-on activities. The last is feedback; teacher should give feedback to increase student interest and self-efficacy.

Today activity also a motivation section, every group present their ability in motivate their friend. That is interesting, but I can’t perform well in this motivation section. I am sorry, because my group still confuses the flow of word that should tell to the audience. Actually the ability to motivate is very important to make student feel interesting and motivate to learn. I will learn more to do it.

We, as a Motivator :)

MMSEL class in the last meeting was very interesting! It was because of the activity. We did motivation session that made by us as a motivator. Each group have different theme of motivation session and for sure it was interesting. 🙂

Before we did the activity, we started the class by showing others about our mood todays. So, we can know what others feeling in the morning when class started. That’s funny, because my friends and I gave different emoticon that showed on their face. It was happy, sad, broken, no feeling, sleepy, etc. But, most of them gave a happy face because we know that the class will be funny and interesting! 🙂

Ok, for the first, Mrs. Lydia explained us about Instructional variables, developing interest in learning activities. Instructional variables are very important to increase students’ motivation in learning. Instructional variables consist of introductory focus, understanding personalization, promoting involvement, and feedback. Introductory focus is a lesson beginning that attracts attention and provides a conceptual framework for the lesson. In this part, we talk about how to get student’s attention in the beginning of the lesson, how to make students interest and want to know more about the lesson. We can use some tools/techniques for this, we can give problems or questions to students that related to the lesson, concrete examples, also give explanation about the objectives.

If we talk about personalization, we concern about what the teacher can do to personalize the lesson to students’ lives. We try to understand what students want and don’t go far away from what the students know and also students environment. That’s we called it understanding personalization, try to understand the students.

Then, involvement talk about the interesting way to make students involved in the activity, so they can actively participating in learning activity. Maybe we can use open ended question for strategy in promoting involvement because open ended questions is important to increase intrinsic interest and students’ motivation. Each student will feel free to share their opinion to others and maybe we can more understand about their ability and what they want to know. For the last, it’s about feedback. We can meet the students need and what they can improve.

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?q=motivation+session&um=1&hl=id&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1366&bih=639&tbm=isch&tbnid=_b47eYqxg7nOzM:&imgrefurl=http://mftpowersessionaug9th.eventbrite.com/&docid=VOXA4fAxHK95mM&itg=1&imgurl=http://evbdn.eventbrite.com/s3-s3/eventlogos/11121093/1973421557-1.jpg&w=437&h=200&ei=J8HmTquOLYXwrQel7siwCg&zoom=1

After that, we did motivation session and we acted as a motivator. My group and I talk about multiple intelligences. For the motivation session, evik acted as a moderator, huda as presenter, Titiah as Valentino risa and I acted as Agnes Mocere. What a weird name I think. haha  -___-a Ok forget it, we continue. Agnes is a singer, and valentino as a racer. They have their own ability. Maybe they have abilities in Math, English, science, art, writing, and etc. But, they have chosen what they want to improve until they were being a people like now, as a singer and as a racer. As a teacher, maybe we can force the students to do all various intelligences. They can choose what the best one for them, they have different multiple intelligences and they can improve their abilities with their intelligences. And when we talk about motivation, we can support them to reach what they want because their life is in their hand, teacher only act as a motivator for them that always supporting them to be the best one. 🙂

Week 11th Reflection: Positive Climate and Motivation

In this week we have three major activities in our MMSEL class, drawing, gallery walk and role play. Those three activities were helping me understand what kind of factors or aspects that needed in our class in order to make our students motivated to learning and motivated in the learning process.

First is drawing about classroom condition that bring positive climate and motivate students to learn. Last week I drew a class with semi-circle siting arrangement, so teacher could see all students and all students could see teacher too. Other consideration was this class expected to accommodate students with visual type learning, this sitting arrangement provide equal chance to see the board. I also tried to accommodate kinesthetic learner, this semi-circle sitting arrangement provide more spaces so kinesthetic learner will have more chance to move. Besides that to support learning process, I also put some learning resources and computer that connected to internet in one corner of the class, for preparation just in case if students need more resources.

After finished the drawing, Ms. Lidya asked us to put our drawings to the wall and did gallery walk. The class divided into two group, first group was consists of half of students’ numbers will stayed in their drawings ad explain what the meaning that lay behind the drawing. The rest students will present their drawings later after Ms. Lidya give instruction to swap the position.

When the gallery walk finished, Ms. Lidya formed group to make role play about topic that given. My group consists of Ratih, Shinta, Nanay, Joey and I, presented role play about Order and Safety in the class. Then, after several minutes discussion we decided to divide the role of each person. Joey and I became students who bullied Shinta and Nanay, and Ratih become teacher. Our role play was good enough, so our friends could get the message that we want to deliver through role play.

Another role good role play was fourth group who presented role play based on topic Task Comprehension. They played the role play very well and from their role play I could get that in Task Comprehension, they emphasize on students need for autonomy by gave students chance to choose task that students want to do. Besides that, fourth group also emphasize on importance of the task for students and how to increase students’ awareness of what students should do in order to complete the task.

Gallery walk and role play really help me to understand the material easily. I hope I can create activities that more interesting in my future class, so my students will motivated and enjoy the learning process, and more important is to make them addicted for learning.

Create a Motivating Classroom :)

As always, MMSEL class in the last meeting was interesting because we did drawing and role play again. We learned about class climate through those activities. First, draw condition of class that represent effective classroom that can increase students motivation in learning process. We design our own classroom that can be effective classroom environment in supporting students’ motivation in learning.

There are one teacher and some students in the picture of my own classroom. Students work in group and make a discussion. So, they can share their opinion to each other. We draw students in group discussion doesn’t mean that the students always work in groups because it can’t be effective. Sometimes they need to work and learn individually, then try to understand about what the teacher explained. So, there is a time to learn individually and also to learn in group. In my picture, teacher was illustrated move from one side to other side. It means that the teacher walk around the class to monitor the students. If teacher found the student who can’t understand well, teacher will help them. The result of group work will be presented and explained by the students in front of the class, so each group can share each other to get other information that is meaningful for them. Then, the product of student’s project will be displayed in the class. It shows appreciation from the teacher to students.

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?q=motivating+classroom&um=1&hl=id&client=firefox-a&sa=N&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&biw=1024&bih=575&tbm=isch&tbnid=HWXTJXJTTfDw4M:&imgrefurl=http://www.teachersatrisk.com/2008/10/&docid=aJ4ZI_AK4g1iuM&imgurl=http://www.teachersatrisk.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/10/motivation3.jpg&w=480&h=226&ei=g8PdTsmpJMq4rAeVvtXsCA&zoom=1

I think class condition that I draw can represent about the effective classroom climate that can motivate students in learning. But there are some conditions also from the teacher that can create a motivating classroom. Those are order and safety, success, challenge, and task comprehension. Mrs. Lydia divides us into some groups and each group did role play to represent about one aspect. My group and I did role play about success developing learner efficacy. To develop it, teacher can start the lesson with questioning and give open ended question, use variety of high quality examples, develop lessons questioning, and also give feedback to students. So they can increase their performance in learning better.

From other groups, I also learned about order and safety, challenge, and task comprehension. I will explain more about challenge in this reflection. I learned this from group 2. About challenge, teacher increase students’ perception about their ability. Students have to know their own ability and what they can improve, but still have a confidence that they can do their best in doing work. If teacher find the student who can’t do their work, teacher can ask them to discuss with their friends so students can know about other perception how to solve the problem. After they finished their work, they can take other problem, higher problem that can increase their competence. In this case, teacher encourages students and gives challenge to the students.

We learned a lot from this activity, how to design an effective classroom climate and how to create a motivating classroom. Hopefully I can be a teacher who can make positive classroom climate, a motivating classroom that can support students’ learning. 🙂

Class Situation, Learner, and Teacher

Last week of MMSEL course, we have a lot of discussion in group. The topic for the day is about 3 things that can affect someone to learn, that are class structure, teacher, and also learner. Before we started the activity, we have brain gym to make us more relax and ready to do the activity. After that, we did group discussion. Mrs. Lydia divided us into some groups.

My group and I discussed about the teacher. We consider for a moment about motivating teacher that helped us as a learner to genuinely want to learn who was able to influence us to go beyond another course finished, another credit earned. We imagined that teacher and remember what learning was like in that classroom. For me, it was in junior high school. When I was in Junior high school, I join science club. This class is prepared for Olympiad. This club is guided by the teacher that can motivate me when I learnt about Mathematics. He showed me many application in Mathematics, how to learn with the real object, for example learn Math using “Hanoi Tower”. I learned about pattern of sequence and how to get the sequence by using that real object. That’s very interesting. My teacher always supports me when I felt that I can’t solve the problem, when I stacked on one problem. He was a teacher who was motivated me and my friends. In this club, we have the same purpose and we struggle together to get that we want. This club is like special class after or before the formal class. We solve higher level problem and my teacher show me the way how to solve it with interesting way. I think the teacher like that can motivate us in better learning and can increase student’ self expectation.

For the class structure, there are some affects that can improve student’s motivation. That are about classmates who care, helpful, cooperative, kind, active, responsible, open minded and respect. That can make us comfortable in learning process. Beside of that, the class condition (Clean, temperature, facilitation, size) is important. Motivation and interest from learner itself is also affects someone to learn that can help students in developing their self confidence in learning process.

Then, we discussed about teacher characteristics deeply. It’s about mastery focused and performance. In mastery focused, we talk about the material. We focus on the process, not result; teacher can give project or task based on students’ interest but still challenges. About the performance, teacher can make every students feel like somebody. Students can see the performance and reflect each other to make a better learning. I hope for the future, I can be a teacher that can motivate my students in learning.

Perspective of Stupidity

In this week sixth of MMSEL class, we have different activity, and I like it; watching a movie. The title of this movie is “I Not Stupid”. This movie is one of inspirational movies that I have been watched. This movie is telling many stories that usually happened in our daily life such as friendship, school, bully, gossip, motivation, trusty, and belief. The big picture of this movie is about endurance / patience in facing problems that strongly influenced by motivation.
Brief story about this movie is about students who sit on EM3 class. This class has an unmotivated teacher who teaches in mathematics. The teacher said that EM3 students are hopeless. However, the situation changed when they have new teacher who motivate them in learning Mathematics. In this class there are three students who become central of the movie.

First student is Terry who very obedient and has middle-low intelligence. He has a mother who very obsessed with English and very authoritarian. His father is an entrepreneur who facing decreasing market shares in his business. He also has sister who very labile and like other adolescence, want to become free. Second student is Kok Pin who shows talent in art but his parents obsessed in Mathematics & Science, so he forced to be mastered at mathematics and science by using negative reinforcement by his mother. Third student is Boon Hock who has capability in mathematics but face problem in learning because he has to help his family who has low income.

These three students share same problem, having parents who see them as stupid students and desired them to be mastered in Mathematics & English. Besides that problem, they also have their own problem which increases their problems. For example, Terry always needs other people to protect him (needs of safety) from someone who bullied him. Other problem is Boon Hock who actually has talent in Mathematics but has limitation on learning time. He has to help his family in food court, studying, and babysitting his sister at once. However I think he is most lucky one, because his mother is not as extreme as Terry’s or Kok Pin’s mother. He also show increasing mark after he motivated by EM3 Mathematics’ new teacher.

Another example is Kok Pin who always receives punishment when he got bad mark by his mother. Actually, his mother is undesired those reinforcement but her friends suggested to use negative reinforcement. This reinforcement becomes extrinsic motivation which pushes Kok Pin to study hard and get good mark (showing goal of performance). Even though he has learnt very hard he still got bad mark and it make him feel scared to going home. In the state of scare of his mother and her punishment, Kok Pin decided to commit suicide by jumping from the building (failure that decreasing self-esteem). Fortunately, police officer catches him (even at first there is misunderstanding) and save him from his death which is has been in front of his eyes (needs of care and love).

I Not Stupid

Source

Like another predictable movie, this movie also provides a happy ending. First, Kok Pin won drawing competition in USA and also recommended to study there. Then, Terry’s father and Kok Pin’s father making peace. Even, Kok Pin’s father help Terry’s father to regain market share. At the end, this movie implicitly told us to beware of our action who judges someone as stupid. Maybe, at that field s/he has weaknesses, but in other filed s/he could be far mastered compare with us. So, it is very unwise judging someone (especially students) just from one perspective, we have to see them from different and many perspectives, especially for us as teacher candidates who will be deal with various students in the class.

I am not Stupid too!

The last meeting of MMSEL class was so interesting. We just watched a movie with title “I not Stupid”. That movie is so interesting and very inspiring me as a teacher candidate.  This movie tell about three students who are all in low level class, the hopeless bunch in the “perfect” education system, where the smart ones gets the recognition of being smart and the weak ones are branded unfairly as stupid, useless and of no use to the society which favor prioritizes degrees, science and math.

One of Students is under pressure of his mother who pressures him to get 90 points in his exams, but he will never be able to do it. It was not because he doesn’t want to study, but it because of Math and Science is not his expert. As we know that he is good in painting, but his mother still force him to get good mark in math test. In that situation, I think this student can’t develop his ability to draw. Forced by his mother also can decrease his self-esteem, he’ll think that he is stupid and useless, but actually he is not. But I like a moment when there is one teacher who come and always support him in whatever situation. This teacher like his painting and doesn’t force him to get good mark in math lesson because she know that he is good in painting.

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?imgurl=http://jiffest.org/2004/photos/I-Not-Stupid_thumb.jpg&imgrefurl=http://jiffest.org/2004/synopsis.cfm%3Ftitle%3DI%2520Not%2520Stupid&usg=__fVJKdoFrHjyKtUQiWnOTJcM5dOw=&h=125&w=200&sz=15&hl=id&start=12&sig2=5MVFzC0pVa8aCxrlFIcZww&zoom=1&tbnid=Oy-EPg5GWs3qmM:&tbnh=65&tbnw=104&ei=aXivToveFYmIrAfq9KVJ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Di%2Bnot%2Bstupid%2Bsynopsis%26um%3D1%26hl%3Did%26sa%3DN%26biw%3D1366%26bih%3D677%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1

Another life from one student named terry who is rich, but does not even know how to make coffee and is often too scared to stand up for his much braver friends as his mother taught him “It’s none of you businessssssss”. You know that one thing that terry didn’t have is freedom. He never can decide one best thing for his life because he always listen and do whatever his mother saying. Based on Maslow theory, everyone need physiological, safety, and loves to make them feel comfort with the environment. But from this point of view, what Terry get for their life? He just has material that he needed, safety from his parents (not environment), how about loves and freedom? He can’t do anything that he wants to do and he doesn’t ever know how about the environment. So, parent’s love and care is not about the material, but also give freedom and let the children know the environment deeper.

Then, one other student who should taking care one stale of his mother, taking care of his younger brother while his mom works, doing a lot of homework even though he is hopeless to do it.  But, he motivated after being inspired by a new math teacher who actually cared about her students, studied hard to better himself, because he knew he could.

So, from this movie I learnt many things that students need person who can motivate them to reach their dream. There is no stupid student, but there are students who doesn’t have teacher who can understand and motivate them. Very inspiring movie 🙂

What are my teaching reflection?

In second week of my teaching experience, i have taught students in class X-1 and also conducted action research for reflection to improve my teaching. As i said before on the first reflection of my teaching experience, i used TGT (Team Games Tournament) for my method of action research. This method make the students feel enjoy the class because they can work in group to solve the problems. Each group compete each other to collect the point, we called it as tournament. But there is one question in my mind, the students are really understood about the lesson or not.

Before I started TGT (Team Games Tournament), I have explained the topic about how to find the root of quadratic equation to the students. I hope they can really understand what I explained to them. To check their understanding, I gave them some exercises in group and let them to discuss it. I asked the students to make sure that all of group members should to understand how to solve the problem of quadratic equation. They said that they were feeling happy and enjoy the class. But, when TGT started, some of them can’t understand well about quadratic equation, we call it slow learner and how can they solve the problem if they don’t really understand about it? This is reflection for me, the method that I used can motivate them to learn but this method didn’t work for some students, they can’t really understand about the material deeply. Some students are fast learner and some students are slow learner. Although we used TGT as group work, actually some of them still work individually.

Other reflection for me is about handout for students. My master teacher usually gives them handout that contains of material and step-step to solve the problem. In my first teaching, I gave them handout about quadratic equation, problem, and also steps to solve the problem. But in my next teaching, I didn’t give handout to my students. And do you know what happened when I didn’t give them handout? They were confused how to solve the problem and what the steps that should be taken by them. They were not really learn the material from the explanation from the teacher. When I gave them exercises, the students always ask me the way or the steps how to solve it. If they have got it, then they did it. I think giving handout to the students is not good enough and not effective. Actually, the purpose is to make the students understand the material systematically and clearly. But it can make the students being dependent and they can’t brainstorm it by themselves. That’s my reflection. Hopefully i can do better in the next teaching. 🙂

I Love All of My Students!

In this semester, I did teaching Experience in one school at Menteng . This is my first time to teach alone in the classroom and also do actions research in this school. I taught first grade for topic Quadratic equation. Before I teach the students in class X-1, I observed my master teacher when he taught the students in class XI-social about statistic. My master teacher is more teacher centered learning. He just explained and gave examples about statistical data. Some students were not looked enthusiastic in learning and not all students were being active in the class.

I want to give something different with my master teacher. I want to teach my students in class X-1 with cooperative learning by using TGT (Team Games Tournament). The method that I used is not fully TGT (Team Games Tournament), but just let the students work in group to increase their understanding , make sure that all of them understand about the topic and then give them individual test. The result of individual test will be depends on individual score and also mean of group score. So, each student in each group should be understood about the topic that we have learned. Individual test will be on different level. Each student in one group will get 1 problem that suitable with his/her understanding. But first of all, I have divided them into some group and each group consists of students that have different level of understanding (Based on the result of their mid-term test).

Why I use TGT (Tea Games Tournament)? It was because of used cooperative learning by group work for the first meeting in class X-1 is not effective enough. There are some students who still work individually even though in their group. Beside of that, students with low level of understanding were not actively participating in group work.  When I ask some students to solve the problem, there are some students who were not really understand how to solve it. So, I used TGT (Team Games Tournament) to increase their motivation in learning math and also improve their understanding that can improve their achievement.

In other that, I learnt other thing. There is one of my students who a special student. He is gifted student. He is clever student, but for Mathematics only. My master teacher said that my special student is actually an autism student; he is the best in mathematics. One of my reason using TGT is because of him too. He has high level of understanding in math. 🙂

http://www.google.co.id/imgres?imgurl=http://dobel-klik.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/0511-0903-1003-0820_Asian_Elementary_Student_Reading_a_Book_clipart_image.png&imgrefurl=http://dobel-klik.net/blogging/5-cara-membuat-postingan-mudah-dibaca/&usg=__qkq5PUEXQg6UntdSfIudmeDSyh4=&h=343&w=350&sz=64&hl=id&start=8&sig2=lUBq7X_cTq2cnNJE0KOv1A&zoom=1&tbnid=CmA-RWBKyX6cEM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=120&ei=wGmdTqP2AdDQrQf44KGrCQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dstudent%26um%3D1%26hl%3Did%26sa%3DN%26tbm%3Disch&um=1&itbs=1

In other class, in class XI-Social, I met a special student too; she said that she is a half-autism. She has a very obsessive behavior with one thing that is about computer. She loves all about thing that related to technology. But, in learning other thing, she can’t concentrate if she is not sit down at front row.

From this experience, I get the point that my student in my class (he) and also student in social class are need more attention, care and motivation from us to feel that they feels. Last but not least, I just want to say actually my students has different characteristic and behavior, but I love all of them however they are! 🙂
